Performance within safety

Measuring and monitoring safety performance is an important part of any organization's continuous improvement cycle. We follow up on safety statistics monthly and always take the opportunity to learn from our experiences.

In Skanska, safety performance is measured by a combination of lagging and leading indicators with increasing emphasis on monitoring preventive actions and behaviors. Skanska places increasing importance on adopting, measuring and reporting the performance of a range of Safety Leading Indicators.

How we measure safety performance

Measuring and monitoring safety performance is an important part of any organization's continuous improvement cycle. Timely accurate data is essential and the monthly Safety Statistics Reporting is supported by a global reporting database.

The principle lagging indicator is the one day lost time accident per million hours worked. Number of employee lost time accidents times 1,000,000 hours divided by total labor hours. This includes Skanska employees as well as contractors.

In 2016, the lost time accident rate was reduced to 2.8 from 3.3 in 2015, a marginal improvement that continues the long-term trend of the past nine years with a 50 percent reduction since 2007.

Global Safety Stand Downs

It is important to Skanska that we take all opportunities to learn from our experiences, even bad ones. We also believe that those who work with us deserve respect. So, when we suffer a tragic accident we do our best to learn lessons from the incident to prevent recurrence.

A Global Safety Stand Down (GSSD) is held at every workplace across Skanska and includes our contractors and clients, where the accident is discussed and lessons can be learned and respect paid with a minute of silence.
