An award-winning new school

We have won a number of awards for our work on Woodlands School in Basildon, Essex which we designed, built and now maintain.

Built in 2014, the £26 million school is home to 1,500 pupils aged 11 to 16. The state-of-the-art secondary school has a floor area of 11,000sqm. It also has an all-weather sports pitch with artificial grass.

Every classroom in the school has interactive whiteboards. Its halls are equipped with overhead projectors and screens, plus DVD, satellite TV and sound systems.

An additional £1.8 million vocational training facility was handed over in 2015.

Facilities management

Skanska is providing a range of facilities management services at the school, until 2037.

Our highly-skilled team maintains the fabric of the building and carries out mechanical and electrical work. We are also responsible for cleaning, security and grounds maintenance.

Our team also maintains a number of other schools in Essex.

Award-winning approach

The project has picked up a number of awards – many relating to the use of building information modelling (BIM) during construction. Skanska is highly-skilled in the use of BIM, having received the British Standards Institute (BSI) BIM Kitemark™. BIM uses highly sophisticated computer models, with huge amounts of data, to deliver a more efficient and effective result for the customer.

Accolades the project has received include a British Construction Industry (BCI) Award in the BIM Project Application (Building) category, BIM initiative of the year from the Heating and Ventilation News Awards, and the same award from the Education Estates Awards.
